Work relationship refers to the way workers in a given organization relate with one another. The people you work with and the relationship you have with them have a long way in determining your work output. More so, your work relationship will influence your measure of job satisfaction and the hope you have for greater heights in your chosen career. So how can you build a good work relationship?
1.
Have
a healthy self esteem.
Self esteem refers to this measure of confidence in one’s ability and love for one’s self. Anyone with a poor self esteem would either feel inferior to others or feel incapable of what others. On the other hand, it could be a case of feeling superior or better than all others. On both ends, poor self esteem affects your relationship with your colleagues negatively. Be confident about yourself; love yourself for what you can do while you aspire to be better at other things too.
2.
Do
not be petty.
The other way to express the idea here is to say, avoid gossips and irrelevant jokes. This habit degrades you and makes you less the real person you ought to be. Before you say anything about anyone, be sure that it is a true and helpful information, that it is been passed across to the right audience and at the right time.
3.
Know
your duties and be diligent at them.
Every position in an organization has its specific job description. Know what is expected of you and be diligent at them. You can also extend a hand of help to others occasionally. This shows that you have the good of the organization at heart and it has its reward too in the long run.
4.
Commend
expertise and good attempts. When your colleague just pulled a string, it
will not reduce your importance to commend them. It is a way of saying, ‘I have
my point of strength and you have yours’. It also encourages them to d better.
So, commend the efforts of your colleagues when they do well.
5.
Be
polite.
Human dignity must be preserved irrespective of the position we
attain when compared to others. Using polite words such as ‘thank you’, ‘can you …’, ‘kindly help with …’, ‘please’, ‘may I …?’,
‘I’m sorry’ and so on when needful makes you an attractive person to
others.
6.
Keep
important events that relates to your colleagues to mind such as birthday,
wedding anniversary, and so on.
There are days and events that convey meaningfulness and importance to people. Keeping such to mind creates a bond between your colleagues and you. Use the diary or reminder if need be.
7.
Be
empathic with other’s weakness but do not condone slothfulness.
We all have
things we are very good at doing and otherwise. If you have someone who is not
as good as you at some point, understand with them but challenge them to be
able to reach the height of productivity that the organization needs.
8.
Perhaps,
there is a difficult person or even BOSS…
It is funny that we all face this. There is that one person who seems very important to the success of the team but is also difficult to work with. For such people, the principles outline earlier are very handy but in addition, one thing that must be maintained with such people is to show them unconditional love and commitment especially when it is a boss. Such people are mostly difficult outside because they feel insecure within them. Your expression of unconditional love and commitment will create a security for them with you and win their heart in the long run.
